Types of scars and treatment
Dr Nicole’s first step in developing a bespoke treatment programme is to assess the type of scarring during your in-depth consultation. She can then look in more detail at the severity of the scarring and discuss the different treatment options.
Keloid/hypertrophic scars – these scars occur when too much collagen is produced at the site of a wound causing the scar to continue growing (after the wound has healed). Keloid scars are often raised, itchy, painful, hairless and shiny. They are usually found on ear lobes, shoulders, upper arms and on the upper back and breastbone. Hypertrophic scars occur for the same reasons as keloid scars, but they do not continue to grow beyond the wound area (as keloid scars do). They are red and raised, and may become less thick in time.
Treatment – Dr Nicole can treat both types of scar with triamcinolone injections. These are a type of corticosteroid injection that softens, flattens the scar and reduces itching. The amount of injections and length of treatment depends on the nature of the scarring. Dr Nicole will discuss this in detail during your consultation.
Atrophic or pitted scars and stretch marks – Atrophic and pitted scars are usually caused by skin conditions such as acne and chickenpox. The scars have a sunken or pitted appearance. Stretch marks show as narrow streaks on the surface of the skin. They are often red or purple gradually fading to a silvery colour. They occur when the skin is stretched by weight gain or during pregnancy.
Treatment – Dr Nicole uses micro-needling and chemical peels to effectively target these types of scarring. Micro-needling is a rejuvenation treatment that works by stimulating the skin to produce new collagen and elastin. This production enables the skin to regenerate and repair naturally to help heal scarring. Chemical peels work by removing damaged outer layers of skin to reveal smoother, younger-looking skin beneath. They improve skin texture and reduce scarring. Laser treatments or radiofrequency treatments are sometimes more effective for this type of scarring. If appropriate, Dr Nicole can discuss lasers or radiofrequency treatments with you, and carry out these treatments accordingly. Generally speaking, a course of treatments (about 3-6 sessions, sometimes more) for micro-needling, chemical peels and lasers are needed for best results.
