How does topical minoxidil work?
The mechanism by which minoxidil increases hair regrowth is still unknown. It has been demonstrated to enhance blood flow to the scalp skin and to facilitate the transition of hair follicles from the dormant telogen to the active growing anagen phase.
Several factors cause androgenetic alopecia, the most important of which is the binding of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) to androgen receptors in the hair follicle. This causes hair miniaturisation (smaller hair follicles) and complete hair loss. Finasteride prevents testosterone from being converted to DHT, lowering the amount of DHT available to bind to androgen receptors in the hair follicle.
How was topical minoxidil discovered?
Topical minoxidil is an FDA-approved medication for androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern hair loss). Since its FDA approval in 1988 for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, it has been widely used (off-label) in the treatment of other types of alopecia, including telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, scarring alopecia, eyebrow hypotrichosis, monilethrix, and chemotherapy-induced alopecia. Studies, including clinical trials, case series, and case reports, provide evidence of its use for each condition.
So, how does the treatment course work?
The initial treatment phase should last at least six months to see the effects, and if the treatment works for you without creating any side effects, it can be continued indefinitely. A review is typically recommended every three months, every six months, and every year after that.
Hair growth typically improves gradually and is first inconspicuous. To retain the benefits of the treatment, it must be sustained.
