Hair loss affects both men and women – and can have an emotional toll, as well as a physical one.
The most common form of hair loss is female or male-pattern baldness. This is normally a matter of genetics, but it can be down to hormonal changes, such as the menopause.
There are other types of baldness, or alopecia, each with their own causes. Sometimes it can be down to autoimmune conditions, medication, emotional stress and changes in diet. It is important to have the correct diagnosis established by an expert in the field. Dr Nicole has a subspecialty interest in hair disorders and has treated many patients with hair loss. Here are some of her methods for treating hair loss:
Avoid harsh treatment of hair – over bleaching, tight weaves, hair extensions and hot tools can all result in hair that is brittle, weakened at the roots and can cause excessive shedding. By finding ways to style hair without harsh irons or styling tools, using gentle products and avoiding harsh peroxide can help hair recover and grow back stronger.
Scalp health: if you suffer from a dry, irritable scalp, the health of your hair will suffer. Inflammation in the scalp can impair hair growth, therefore it is important to ensure that any scalp inflammation is controlled adequately. The key to this is to ensure that the cause of scalp inflammation is diagnosed and treated early.
Using medication: Dr Nicole offers a range of prescribed medical treatments and procedural treatments (steroid injections and platelet-rich plasma (PRP)) which have been shown to have significant results on female and male pattern baldness. These treatments tend to take around a few months to work and need to be continued in order for the hair growth to have continued effect.
Hair care and supplements: can provide the body with the nutrients and ingredients needed to trigger healthy hair growth, and stop the spread of hair loss. Often a poor diet or ill health can limit much needed nourishment for healthy hair. Dr Nicole will be able to discuss the appropriate hair care and supplements for you.
Hair transplants: this is the most drastic course of action, but it can be an effective way of restoring hair growth.
